brother to Gideon Elias Olsen (1844)
written by Mary Jean Garrison
Christian Waldemar Olsen was born 16 February 1842 in Budolphi, Aalborg, Aal-
borg, Denmark to Jens Olsen and Marie Dorthea Berg. He was the sixth child having
been named after his brother Waldemar Christian who had been born and died just two
years earlier. He was the fourth child to follow his mother's example of joining the
Mormon Church. He was baptized on 9 February 1851 at the age of nine. When his
mother died in 1853 he accompanied his sister Barbara and her new husband Christian
John Larsen to Zion. Before disembarking from the steamer at St. Louis, Missouri, he
became ill with an attack of cholera. His sister and her husband attended him through the
night, but he died at 6:30am on the morning of 13 March 1854 "passing away quietly in
the Lord" on board the steamer "Saint Louis." He was twelve years old.
